It seems to me that it’s often the same old trick: they put Milla Jovovich on the poster, and that draws in a ton of viewers… but she’s barely in the movie! Still, she remains an incredible actress and artist. Her biggest fans know that all too well!
Here, we mostly see Luke Evans and Billie Boullet.
This is a science fiction, thriller, and action film… and yet, I’m not at all a fan of science fiction or action movies, unless they’re older ones or superhero movies. Yes, I know pretty precisely what I like and what I don’t like.
A gritty post-apocalyptic thriller? Sure, but there isn’t that much action!
Milla Jovovich—no need to introduce her! She’s a Serbian-Russian actress, singer, stylist, and former model born in Ukraine who became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Her films include Joan of Arc (1999), Resident Evil 1–6 (2002–2016), The Fifth Element (1997), and I’d add Chaplin (1992), Future World (2018), and Bringing Up Bobby (2011). Avoid Ultraviolet (2005), Monster Hunter (2020), or In the Lost Lands (2025)… unless you’re a huge fan and absolutely want to see all her movies!
I can’t really speak for Luke Evans, though. I haven’t seen many of his movies, even though I really liked Dracula Untold (2014). I haven’t seen The Hobbit 1, 2, or 3 (2012–2014), and I haven’t watched any of the Fast & Furious movies, so I haven’t seen Fast & Furious 8 (2017). I haven’t even seen Beauty and the Beast (2017), even though I love the cast! And I didn’t like The Girl on the Train (2016).
As for young Billie Boullet, she’s the best surprise in this movie. Yet another young adult brimming with talent, younger than the Canadian Katie Douglas, but older than the American Mckenna Grace. Ahhh… it would be quite a trio if they were brought together!
Boullet is a British actress. She began her career in the CBBC television series The Worst Witch (2020) . Since then, she has played the lead role of Anne Frank in the miniseries A Small Light (2023), which earned her a nomination. In any case, I wish her a long career.
This film has a ridiculous side, but also a very entertaining one. The dialogue is good, and Luke Evans is a wonderful storyteller. The father-daughter relationship is magical.
As usual, we don’t see the creatures as much as we’d like, and we don’t see Milla Jovovich as much as we’d like. The special effects are decent. There are some scenes in a cave that are pretty creepy. I definitely and clearly wouldn’t want to live in a world like that.
The ending left me wanting more. Just when something amazing and long-awaited is about to happen… the movie cuts off and ends. Very frustrating!
Let’s not confuse Milla’s husband, Paul W.S. Anderson (who hasn’t made any good movies in recent years—or for a very long time), with the director of this film, Brad Anderson. Yes, because with names like that, it’s easy to get them mixed up.
Brad Anderson is the one who made Session 9 (2001), which isn’t bad, but is clearly not as good as The Silent Hour (2024), Stonehearst Asylum (2014), and Transsiberian (2008), or the excellent The Call (2013). I haven’t seen Beirut (2018), Blood (2022), or The Machinist (2004) yet, by the way, even though it’s one of his most important films. So many movies to watch… and so little time…
