No podría haber pedido algo mejor.

For Lorenzo Orsetti

The One Who Did Not Die for War, but for the Struggle in the Name of Humanity

For the anniversary of the martyrdom of Lorenzo Orsetti, Ş. Tekoşer Piling, Italian martyr of the Rojava Revolution, we publish the letter of an Indonesian friend, that found hope and inspiration in the struggle of Lorenzo. Lorenzo fell on 18th March 2019 in the struggle against ISIS, and his revolutionary approach to life, that arrived to us through his writings and video messages, became an inspiration to young people in Italy and beyond.

I first encountered you not through the news or the newspapers, but through a simple post on an anarchist website—without ornament or embellishment, just the quiet story of a fighter from Florence who chose to leave the comfort of his home to stand on the front line against the brutality of ISIS in Rojava.

Then I saw the video of your funeral, shared by Tekosîna Anarsîst — the Anarchist Struggle (TA). Your journey home was not accompanied by a rigid military ceremony or by the waving flags of a State, but by the banners of popular organizations, surrounded by hundreds of faces: Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Yazidis, Turkmen, all mourning together, calling you heval, brother, şehîd namirin—the martyr who never dies.

In a desert so often labeled “foreign” by the West, you were embraced as part of the family by its peoples. It was no coincidence. It was the fruit of a life lived with honesty, just as you once said: “Every storm begins with a single drop.”

As an anarcho-communist from a nation once crushed under the boots of Suharto’s “New Order”—where state violence was called “development” and freedom was labeled “a threat”—and now, watching history repeat itself as militarism rises again, remembering you rekindles something within me. In you I saw something rare: you showed that internationalism is not just a slogan. It is a shared hope that guides us all. Together with your internationalist comrades, you breathed life into its truest meaning.

You proved that a young European could live in the Middle East not to conquer, but to learn; to protect and in turn be protected; to build together what we call humanity and democratic civilization.

Your values—and those of your comrades—antimilitarism, antifascism, anticapitalism—are bridges. Not only between Italy and Rojava, but among all of us who reject a world divided between rulers and ruled. Here we are building ties with anticapitalist socialists from many traditions—anarchists, libertarian Marxists, autonomous communists, Marxist-Leninists—and in your dream we see our own: a world without oppressive nation-states, without markets that trade lives like data and commodities, without wars that benefit only arms dealers and banks. A world in which communes—not capital or power—shape our lives. The world you fought for until your last breath.

Lorenzo, here as well—in Indonesia, in Southeast Asia, across the Global South—we are planting those same seeds, despite repression, even in scarcity, still organizing underground. And every time we grow tired, we remember: somewhere, a young Italian, together with hundreds like him, chose to die for his convictions—not for a flag, not for glory, but for people who were not even his family.

Your spirit flows through every discussion we have had in recent years, inspired by the paradigm developed by our Kurdish comrades; through every small book we publish; through every clandestine political education session we organize.

You remind us that this struggle is not only about resistance to power. It is about love—radical love, without borders, unconditional.

¡Hasta siempre, heval Lorenzo!

Your dream is our oxygen.

And we will not stop—not until our last breath has also been given.

Remembering Şehîd Tekoşer Piling: TA Sixth Anniversary Statement

Şehîd Tekoşer, Lorenzo Orsetti, have become an example for many of us. He carved himself a place in the front lines of the revolution, and he will always have a place in our hearts. His commitment proved to our kurdish and arab comrades that internationalists stand shoulder to shoulder with them in the fight for a free life. His sacrifice became a painful loss, a reminder of the risks we take when we struggle.

More than 12000 comrades gave their life in the war against the islamic state, against the theocratic fascism of the caliphate. He is one of them. After his sacrifice, many Italian media and even politicians praised him as a hero. But too often that same mainstream media and some of those politicians support the political repression and the judicial punishments of those who followed the same path, the partisan path. They try to simplify his struggle as the Italian who fought ISIS, not looking at the anarchist ideas that motivated such a decision.

When he was alive, as many of us, he experienced in flesh the injustice of this system. He knew very well about the oppressions that forced us to chose such a revolutionary path. The hardships we suffer under capitalism, surviving the alienating reality of working for someone else profit, brought him to reject the inherent injustice of our society. He came to Rojava to find an alternative, to learn and to defend of this revolution, to become a drop of the storm that is coming. For him, fighting in the front lines against ISIS was nothing more and nothing less than a continuation of his anarchist militancy, putting in practice its principles of international solidarity, mutual aid and people’s self-defense.

In the 6th anniversary of his sacrifice, we want to honor him and to extend our warm greetings to his family and friends. Even if today we can not be present with you all, his comrades and those who commemorate him today, you can be sure that we grieve with you. We mourn him, we remember him, and his memory give as strength to we carry on with his revolutionary struggle, with our revolutionary struggle. He gave us all he got, we owe him this and much more.

To remember is to struggle,
Şehîd namirin!

Remembering ş. Tekoşer Piling: 6th anniversary | Têkoşîna Anarşîst

In Memory of Lorenzo Orsetti – Şehîd Tekoşer Piling

To all the Youth.

In 2011 the Third World War was raising the level of conflicts and violence throughout the Middle Eastern region, at the same time from North Africa to the Middle East wide popular uprisings began. The forces of capitalist modernity such as United States, Turkiye and Israel used against these revolts the organization known to us as ISIS. The islamic state with its mentality of hatred and denial of the life, started the immoral and violent aggression against villages, cities and all the democratic movements that were fighting in order to get rid of decades of dictatorships. In doing so these groups were trying to stop the revolutionary wave.

These jihadist groups came to the peak of their strength and established their strongholds in Syria. It is also there where their decline began and where they were defeated thanks to the YPJ and the YPG. Their heroic fight led to the victory against the attacks of the islamist groups.

The resonance of the historical resistance that the defense forces carried out towards the islamic state spread all over the world and thousands of internationalists joined the Revolution in Rojava. Many of them fought until the end, sacrificing their own life in the defense of freedom and democracy.

Their decision to leave behind the life in the capitalist system and fight in defense of the principles of equality, freedom of the woman and of all peoples, had a great influence on all societies in the rest of the world. Their decision made us questioning: those who do not live in service of the society, with daily commitment in order to defend it, improve it and care for it, can be said that they are really living?

Lorenzo Orsetti is one of these young people who, joining the ranks of the resistance as antifascist gave everything and fought until the end. With his choice of living a partisan life in the 21st century he shared, especially to the younger generations, a message of hope: “War is a reality closer than what you think and it regards us all, but for how much these horrors seem invincible and inevitable, there will always be someone who will be willing to take weapons and protect life, tomorrow you can and you will have to be the ones that will do it.”

Lorenzo Orsetti has become martyr defending the Revolution of life with courage and love. Leaving inerasable signs that still guide us in our struggle. His values are immortal and this is why we say that Martyrs Never Die. Their social existence is maintained alive in many different ways: first of all through the continuation of their struggle by those who came after them. Also, their names are taken by other young people who will embrace their lives and example.

The complexity of capitalist modernity requires us to have awareness and deep analysis, but the courage to make the right choices in the right moments is given to us by the example of the martyrs. To understand the historical phase in which we are now it is essential to understand their reality. If the ideas of Rêber Apo are today so widespread, if the revolution and the paradigm are defended in North East Syria, and not only, it is thanks to the sacrifice of the martyrs. Especially if we can now fight for a political and non -military solution is thanks to their sacrifice.

On the 18th of March of six years ago the comrade Lorenzo Orsetti became martyr, during the last offensive that led to the military defeat of ISIS. This reflection is dedicated to his effort: his decision to fight injustice and defend free life led him to come to this land and leave a deep trace that guides and motivates us in our daily work.

In Memory of Lorenzo Orsetti – Şehîd Tekoşer Piling – Abolition Media
