Part 1 – Virtue
Chapter – 19 (Not Backbiting)

குற்றம் சிலநாள் புகழ்நாள் பலவுந்தான்
புறத்திரா லூன்றும் மரம்.

Transliteration:
Kutram silanaal pugazh naal palavum thaan
puraththiraa loonrum maram.

English Meaning :
Fault brings a person shame for a short while, but the ill-fame caused by backbiting stands long like a tree rooted in an open field.

தமிழ் அர்த்தம்:
ஒருவரின் தவறு சில நாள்தான் கேடுயர்த்தும்; ஆனால் பிறரைப் பற்றி புறங்கூறும் பழி வெளி வெளியில் வேரூன்றி நிற்கும் மரம்போல் நீண்ட நாட்கள் அவனைத் துன்புறுத்திக் கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று நன்றல்லது
அன்றே மறப்பது நன்று.

Transliteration:
Naṉṟi maṟappatu naṉṟaṉṟu naṉṟallatu
Aṉṟē maṟappatu naṉṟu.

English Meaning:
To forget a kindness is not good; of what is bad, better to forget at once.

தமிழ் அர்த்தம்:
ஒரு நன்மையை மறப்பது நல்லதல்ல; நல்வற்றல்லாததை உடனே மறந்து விடுவது இனிது.

தினைத்துணை நன்றி செயினும் பனைத்துணையாக்
கொள்வர் பயன்தெரி வார்.

Transliteration:
Thinaiththuṇai nāṉṟi seyinŭm panaiththuṇaiyāk
Koḷvar payantheri vār.

English Meaning:
Even a help as small as a grain of millet, if its benefit is truly understood,
is treasured as if it were the vast support of a palmyra tree.

ஒரு சிறு உதவியும், அவளின் பயனை உணர்ந்தவர்கள் மனதிலேயே அதை பனைமரமாக நினைத்து பெரிதும் மதிப்பார்கள்.

செய்யாமல் செய்த உதவிக்கு வையகமும் வானகமும் ஆற்றல் அரிது.

Transliteration:
ceyyāmal ceyta utavikku vaiyakamum vāṉakamum āṟṟal aritu.

English Meaning:
Even if the earth and the sky were to offer recompense, they could never equal the worth of help given without being asked.

தமிழ் அர்த்தம்:
ஒரு நன்மையை நின்னுடைய கோரிக்கையுமில்லாமல் செய்வது, மண்ணும் வானும் கூட நினைவை தணிக்க மாட்டாது.

செயற்பால தோரும் அறனே ஒருவற்கு
உயற்பால தோரும் பழி

Transliteration:
Seyarpaala thōrum aṟanē oruvarkku
Uyarpaala thōrum pazhi.

English Translation:
For one whose deeds abound in virtue,
Even the accrual of life is a burden—(sin is their burden).

Meaning:
Every misdeed avoided—no matter how small—is also significant.Renouncing even small wrongs is as powerful as performing great goods.

அறத்தான் வருவதே இன்பம் மற்றெல்லாம்
புறத்த புகழும் இல

Transliteration:
Aṟattāṉ varuvatē iṉpam maṟṟellām
Puṟatta pukaḻum il.

English Translation:
Only that pleasure which arises from virtue
Is true contentment; all else is empty praise.

Meaning:
This couplet asserts that real happiness stems solely from living a virtuous life. Everything else—whether fame, wealth, or accolades—is insubstantial and empty without virtue.

வாழ்நாள் வழியடைக்கும் கல்

Transliteration:
Vīḻnāḷ paṭā’amai naṉṟāṟṟiṉ aḥtoruvaṉ
Vāḻnāḷ vaḻiyaṭaikkum kal

English Translation:
If one does not let a single day pass without doing good,
Those deeds block the passage to rebirth.

Meaning:
Couplet emphasizes the power of consistent virtuous actions. Each day of good deeds lays down a barrier that prevents the recurrence of the soul.

அறத்தாறு இதுவென வேண்டா சிவிகை
பொறுத்தானோடு ஊர்ந்தான் இடை

Transliteration:
Arattāṟu ituvēna vēṇṭā sivikai
Poṟuttāṉōṭu ūrntāṉ iṭai.

English Translation:
When seeking the fruit of virtue,
Observe the relation between palanquin-bearer and the one who rides.

Meaning:
One does not need lengthy explanations to know the value of virtue. It’s as clearly seen between the laboring bearer and the honored rider of the palanquin.

அன்றறிவாம் என்னாது அறஞ்செய்க மற்றது
பொன்றுங்கால் பொன்றாத் துணை

Transliteration:
Andrarivām ennāthu arañceyka mattrathu
Pondrungāl pondrāth thunai

English Translation:
Do virtuous deeds today,
What is done now will serve eternally as your unfailing companion.

Meaning:
Couplet teaches us not to postpone virtue—acting righteously without delay will stand by us even beyond death. Don't procastinate.

அழுக்காறு அவாவெகுளி இன்னாச்சொல் நான்கும்
இழுக்கா இயன்றது அறம்

Transliteration:
Aḻukkāṟu avāvekuḷi iṉṉāccol nāṉkum
Iḻukkā iyaṉṟatu aṟam.

English Translation:
Virtue is acting without yielding even to envy, greed, wrath, or harsh speech.

Meaning:
This couplet asserts that true renunciation lies in living free from the four vices: envy, greed/lust, anger , and abusive speech. Mastery over these four is real moral victory.
