The Debian project is a volunteer organisation and its ongoing existence depends upon a decentralised community effort that embodies the free, non-commercial, commons focused and transformative vision of many of the participants of the 1990s internet community. The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on 1993-08-16 and so the Debian Community celebrates its birthday on this day each year.
