June 20, 2013: woke up at Katahdin Steam campground, and made breakfast. After eating I finished loading up my backpack, and gave it a weigh. It was heavier than I would have liked, but it is a long distance to the next town and resupply.
I then said goodbye to my parents, who had to go back to the real world, and started walking south. I spent most of the day in Baxter SP. In the afternoon I reached the road and crossed it into the 100-mile wilderness. I stayed at the first shelter there.

June 19, 2013: after waking up at our campsite, my parents and I hiked up to the summit of Katahdin, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. From the famous sign, I took the first steps of my southbound thru hike. Not the emotional moment it is for northbounders, but it was the start of a life changing hike.
I ended that evening back at the same campsite, about 5 miles down the trail, still with my parents.
