Perth area singer, songwriter, guitarist John Butler has been putting out music since the late '90s, primarily with his band the John Butler Trio. As a band, they created a rich and satisfying form of upbeat rock with a melodic flair and a pop edge that was a stylistic mixture that included folk and blues tones as well as occasional reggae beats. They also did a version of roots rock that incorporated jam band elements. Butler followed the more or less the same blueprint in his post-trio career, perhaps with a bit more emphasis on his remarkable finger picking style on the acoustic guitar. The outlier in his catalog has to be the 2024's Running River, which is dominated by deeply tuneful ambient tones.
