RIP, Bill Atkinson

In a lot of ways - the most important ones - HyperCard, and thus Bill Atkinson, had a profound impact on my life and my career. He passed away on Thursday (June 5, 2025) and I'm just learning about it, which makes me sad - except that I was pretty offline this weekend starting Thursday afternoon, so....

Anyway, he joined Apple as employee #51, and did a lot of thi

Why chat apps are called "productivity tools"?

In work environment there is hardly any larger productivity killer than Microsoft Teams, Slack and similar constantly blinking apps  Though, now that I think of it, shouldn't be surprised - we live in a world where "serverless computing" is a norm, so...

People be so offended at the idea of restarting a program or restarting the computer clearing an issue. #ITStuff

@danie10 I use the multi-column web UI the most and there I was able to pretty much separate the different topics (especially with the new option in 4.2 that you can tell certain lists not to be part of your main timeline), it felt cleaner to me to split up in different accounts. I tried adding the hashtag #itstuff so people could filter my IT related posts out, but that only works for own posts, not for boosts.

I do not know how G+, Telegram handles/handled that, but the concept of to be better able to separate topics sounds nice though.

Just installed Zabbix 6.4.8 (https://www.zabbix.com/release_notes) and was pleased to find there is now also a template for Nextcloud.

Had to download the template here and import it in Zabbix.

https://git.zabbix.com/projects/ZBX/repos/zabbix/browse/templates/app/nextcloud/README.md?at=release%2F6.4

Created a Nextcloud user in the Admin group and created an app password and off it went!

Digging my Zabbix installs.

So, it appears, that when you mount the fan to suck the warm air out of the rack, it works better than when you mount it in such a way it blows cool air in. 🤪

To my defense (hopefully), the fan looks real weird in my opinion when you mount it correctly, so that was the reason I mounted it false initially.

Rack temperature dropped from 46 degrees with one side open to 37 degrees with everything neatly closed.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. After much deliberation I have chosen Duplicati as my new backup tool for the homelab.

Duplicati ended up on my shortlist, together with Bareos. Bareos had in fact more potential, but I found it too un-intuitive and would have to put a lot of time in getting to know the program (time I do not have or am not willing to spend).

So my compromise is to use Duplicati.

What I like about Duplicati:
✅ Easy intuitive GUI
✅ Easy setup of backup target (I use remote systems via SSH and for some S3)
✅ It just worked out of the box. No steep learning curve.
✅ According to reviews, it can handle slow/instable network connections very good

What I dislike about Duplicati:
⚠️ No parallel backup jobs
⚠️ No on-prem central gathering of backup results (am doing it now via https://www.duplicati-monitoring.com (might change to just mail, not sure yet)
⚠️ No easy way in GUI to see which files were backupped

Thanks again!
