This piece about the relationship between #intelligenceanalysts and #decisionmaking is worth your time. Some observations from someone who has had a very different intelligence career. Take from it what you will. 🧵

Yes, things would be better if decision makers learned more about the process, opportunities, and limits of #intelligenceanalysis BUT I can't help thinking every entity in an organization probably thinks the same thing.

Toward a More Constructive Conversation between Policymakers and Intelligence Analysts - War on the Rocks

Dear policymaker, if an intelligence analyst had the chance to offer you candid feedback about your relationship, what would they say? This question is

"Analysts need to learn to apply structured reasoning to their intuitive thinking"

Useful read, especially if you are leading a team of analysts.
The paper reminds us that critical thinking is not as innate as we like to believe. It is hard work that requires structured reasoning, the right guidance, and practice until it becomes internalized.

Why read it:

🔸️Differentiates what critical thinking is, what it is not
🔸️Explains why it matters in intel work
🔸️Provides real-life examples of intel failures due to flawed reasoning
🔸️Gives key concepts of critical thinking in a short & comprehensive format

"Should we use generative AI to write #intelligenceanalysis?" Fantastic piece by @mgruppo

AI might make *some* tasks easier for #intelligenceanalysts but will likely require increased work in other parts of the process. I suspect it's not the time saver some may think it is.

Should we use generative AI to write intelligence analysis?

Why a common professional code of ethics would be helpful right about now.

Researchers (and new #intelligenceanalysts!) really need to be given #OPSEC training as early in their careers as possible (good cyber health should begin in high school but universities should include mandatory training as part of some programs). Good work by @MAArgentino

The State Department is changing its official #font from Times New Roman to Calibri.

Personally, I'm a fan of Baskervilles which is reported to be the "most trusted" font and, hey, #intelligenceAnalysts can use all the help they can get!

A font feud brews after State Dept. picks Calibri over Times New Roman

« The Times (New Roman) are a-Changin, » read the subject line of a cable from Secretary Blinken that was sent to U.S. embassies as part of an accessibility push.

This by @IskanderRehman is excellent! What can we learn from the lessons learned from court advisors, diplomats, & civil servants of the #Renaissance and #Baroque eras? #history #intelligenceAnalysts #policymakers

How to Get Ahead in Washington: Lessons from the Renaissance and Baroque Eras, Part 1 - War on the Rocks

Editor's Note: This is the first of a two-part series.  In the winter of 1935, a freshman senator from Missouri arrived in the District of Columbia after

I&A has about 300 #intelligenceanalysts out of a workforce of about 1000 people

They can't estimate how many finished products are produced per month (I'm not a big fan of quantity estimates as it's easy to put out a lot of junk but...)

Information sharing is important but (IMO) there's a LOT of emphasis on how many people I&A are talking to but not the value of that communication. #DHS #Intelligence #intelligenceanalysis
