"RACHEL Reeves’s Budget is not a new beginning; it is the final, brutal confirmation that the British state is bankrupt – not just of money, but of ideas and morality. Her so-called “fiscal responsibility” is a grotesque capitulation, a pledge to continue bleeding the working class dry to service the debts of a failed economic model. For Scotland, it is the ultimate proof that the Union is a gilded cage, and Westminster a gong pit of short-sighted avarice from which we must escape.
The grim reality Reeves dares not address is that Scotland should already be one of the wealthiest nations on earth. While Norway coolly manages a $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund built on its natural resources, Scotland has been systematically robbed. That vast, common wealth – the legacy of our North Sea oil and gas – was siphoned off to the London Exchequer for decades, frittered away on tax cuts for the rich and vanity projects in the south-east. The ultimate insult is that the very architects and apologists of this grand larceny, the incognizant dullards of Unionism, have the gall to call this settlement a “dividend.” They believe it is a good thing that our national inheritance was stolen to prop up a system that now offers us nothing but managed decline.
This Budget is the blueprint for that decline. It is not a plan for growth, but a declaration of war on the poor, dictated by the City of London and its enforcers at the Office for Budget Responsibility.
With nearly 10% of all UK Government spending – £125 billion – being siphoned directly to the financial elite as interest on debt, we are no longer citizens but serfs. We are forced to pay tribute to the very creditors who profit from our subjugation.
The OBR has explicitly demanded the dismemberment of the post-war social contract. Our NHS, our state pension, our welfare safety net – all are declared “unsustainable” and marked for sacrifice. This fiscal sadism is to be intensified to fund a 1930s-style surge in military spending.
This level of class war is so deeply unpopular it cannot be sustained democratically. The path Reeves is on leads directly to the soft fascism of parties like Reform, who will provide the populist cover for this economic violence.
Unionism, in the face of this evidence, is a cult of nostalgia, a faith-based dogma built on a slavish devotion to institutions that embody the very inequality crushing our people. It is a creed contemptuous of facts, offering only hollow hymns to a past that never was.
Independence is the only rational escape from this death spiral. It is the choice to reject the UK’s neoliberal orthodoxy and embrace a modern, compassionate economic framework. An independent Scotland would not manage austerity; it would abolish it.
By taking our rightful place as a normal European nation, we could:
• Reclaim Our Economic Sovereignty: Free from the OBR's austerity mandate, we could adopt fiscal rules aimed at full employment and social wellbeing. We would understand that public investment is the foundation of a thriving private sector, not a burden to be minimised.
• Build a 21st-Century Economy: The creation of a Scottish currency would grant us the ultimate tool to manage our economy for our people, not the bond markets. A publicly owned Scottish Energy company would become the cornerstone of a green industrial revolution, creating jobs and funding public services – a stark contrast to the privatised misery of the UK system.
• Implement Truly Progressive Taxation: With full powers, we could finally build a tax system that targets wealth, not work. This means a radical overhaul: smashing capital gains loopholes, imposing a proper wealth tax, and making corporations that profit from public misery, like the asylum housing profiteers, pay their fair share.
The choice has never been starker. The Union offers a future of poverty, debt, and servitude to a London-centric elite, a future where the memory of our stolen £2 trillion fund is a permanent monument to our subjugation.
Independence is the path to a prosperous, forward-looking country. It is the choice to use our vast resources and human capital for the good of our own people, to build a society based on solidarity and investment. The question is no longer one of left or right, but of sovereignty versus subjugation. Scotland must choose: will it remain a colony, plundered by Westminster, or will it finally step into the light as a self-determining, thriving nation?"
