On June 20, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, in No. 1:25-cv-11231-IT, vacated NSF’s 15% Indirect Cost Rate policy (NSF 25-034). In compliance with the court’s decision, NSF will not implement the policy at this time."
US District Court Judge Indira Talwani tonight ordered the National Science Foundation to permanently end a regime policy that would cost MIT, Tufts and every other research university in the country hundreds of millions of dollars they would use to pay for the labs, materials and assistants needed to support the grants the foundation claimed it would keep doling out.
It costs money to maintain the various facilities, utilities and personnel that allow scientists to conduct research in the first place. Without federal support, institutions are left scrambling.
