I took a bit of a hiatus from here, not for any reason… if only that interactions were lower, and my energy/spoons required me to step back from some socials. I’m not back for good, but I’m trying to be more social in the wake of needing Beta Readers…

My first job came to mind today. In the 3.5 years I worked there, only one person of color graced the rotating staff of 30+ employees. That person was Israeli, I think, light-skinned, and probably only worked there for a few months. He asked me if I spoke in class today whenever we worked together (thanks, Pearl Jam). Racist jokes were popular with the older staff. I didn’t think much of it and even repeated a few. I was 15-18 years old and knew better despite not knowing what I know today. I prided myself on being open-minded, accepting, and different, but I was still a shy, awkward teen willing to follow the flow to fit in. I imagine this story is all too common among people my age at the very least.
