School mass shooters often display warning signs well before they open fire. How can schools and police take preventive action to save lives?
Simply criminalizing threats increases the risk for violence by worsening the grievances. But even if investigators don’t have enough evidence for an arrest (as was the case in Georgia), they can still monitor students and connect them to mental health services.

Father of Georgia school shooting suspect arrested

Authorities in Georgia say the father of the teen charged with opening fire at a high school has been arrested on charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Colin Gray is alleged to have “knowingly” allowed his son to possess a weapon. The 14-year-old suspect was charged as an adult in the shooting Wednesday at Apalachee High School outside Atlanta. Four people were killed and nine wounded. The teen denied threatening to carry out a school shooting when authorities interviewed him last year about a menacing post on the social media site Discord. That's according to a sheriff’s report obtained Thursday. Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum told AP her investigators did all they could, but there was insufficient evidence to justify an arrest.

Facing primary, Georgia's Kemp delivers on looser gun laws

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is enacting a law abolishing the requirement that Georgians obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun in public. The Republican signed the bill Tuesday at a sporting good store in suburban Atlanta. It takes effect immediately. Kemp supported what advocates call constitutional carry when he ran for governor in 2018. He intensified his advocacy for the measure when former U.S. Sen. David Perdue launched a Republican primary challenge against Kemp. Supporters say the measure lets people defend themselves without government permission. Opponents say that a abolishing the background check for a permit will ease the way for thousands of people to carry guns illegally.
