According to a 13F filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust reduced its Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) holdings by 17%, selling 5.93 million shares. #SanjushDalmia and @JACoates recommend that #UKRI stop funding #APCs as part of its #OpenAccess policy. Instead, it should require grantees to release their grant-funded research as OA #preprints. This type of policy is sometimes called #Plan_U and variations on the theme have been adopted by the #GatesFoundation and #ChanZuckerbergFoundation.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the most influential funding bodies in the world. According to one ranking, it is the second largest charitable foundation, and as of 31 December 2023 had an endowment of around $75.2 billion. That makes a shift in its publishing policy hugely important.

Farmers, faith leaders and representatives of Africa’s largest civil society movement will speak at this press conference, in opposition to the upcoming AGRF "Africa Food Systems Forum" in Kigali. This follows an open letter by faith leaders, endorsed by civil society groups, calling out the Gates Foundation and other funders for decades of harm through AGRA (formerly Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa).
