FMQ - Eskola and Lyytinen: Wandering new paths in jazz and beyond

Saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen and trumpeter Jukka Eskola expand their range on four recent albums. There’s a wealth of sonic diversity here, from indigenous Sámi vocals to hints of whale songs, ‘60s soundtracks and Japanese new age.

Another pick for this week's #JukeboxFridayNight theme, #PunkRock. Here's a Finnish #ProtoPunk classic by the group Virtanen, with lead singer Moog Konttinen and guitarist Veltto Virtanen.

Veltto Virtanen later went on to become a member of the Finnish Parliament, but his political career is another (and almost equally zany) story: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veltto_Virtanen

This week's #JukeboxFridayNight theme is #PunkRock. Here's one of the Finnish punk pioneers, Pelle Miljoona, and one of his best-known early songs, the title of which roughly translates to "Violence and substance abuse". At the time, he was obviously a man with a message!

"Easy listening" but finnish.
Good way to check your level of finnish (mine is just three words over the zero)

Sibelius - Symphony No 3 in C major, Op 52 - Salonen
https://youtu.be/_iPYeALbp50?si=UNFWNfPuH_HjYqrk

I love this piece so much, from the bass and cello quirky but energetic folk dance opening to the stirring chorale theme towards the end of the third and final movement.

It's often described as a piece in which Sibelius turned to classicism. I would prefer to describe it as a constrained romanticism, the very lack of grandiloquent bombast adding so much to the emotional power which comes to fruition as the symphony concludes.

For all sorts of reasons, some of them purely personal, I am attached to this particular performance.

I listen to this symphony frequently. Each time I do so I feel a new and better life surge up within me.

I can't guarantee it will have the same effect on you, but do give it a go. It's only about thirty minutes long, so even if it does little or nothing for you, you won't feel a huge chunk has been taken out of your time.

If, on the other hand, it does work for you, then time and time again over the rest of your life you will want to renew that half hour experience .

Composer Meriheini Luoto: #DeepListening
in the wild

“I’m not really inside any particular genre,” says Luoto.

Her latest album, Talven uneen vaipuen (“Falling Into Winter’s Sleep”), nominated as album of the year in both #classical and #folk categories, delves deep into mixed feelings about nature.
