Sibelius - Symphony No 3 in C major, Op 52 - Salonen
https://youtu.be/_iPYeALbp50?si=UNFWNfPuH_HjYqrk

I love this piece so much, from the bass and cello quirky but energetic folk dance opening to the stirring chorale theme towards the end of the third and final movement.

It's often described as a piece in which Sibelius turned to classicism. I would prefer to describe it as a constrained romanticism, the very lack of grandiloquent bombast adding so much to the emotional power which comes to fruition as the symphony concludes.

For all sorts of reasons, some of them purely personal, I am attached to this particular performance.

I listen to this symphony frequently. Each time I do so I feel a new and better life surge up within me.

I can't guarantee it will have the same effect on you, but do give it a go. It's only about thirty minutes long, so even if it does little or nothing for you, you won't feel a huge chunk has been taken out of your time.

If, on the other hand, it does work for you, then time and time again over the rest of your life you will want to renew that half hour experience .

Composer Meriheini Luoto: #DeepListening
in the wild

“I’m not really inside any particular genre,” says Luoto.

Her latest album, Talven uneen vaipuen (“Falling Into Winter’s Sleep”), nominated as album of the year in both #classical and #folk categories, delves deep into mixed feelings about nature.

Another pick for this week's #TuneTuesday theme, #thebubble. This otherworldly early seventies classic is probably a fairly obvious choice for a Finn:

Pekka Streng (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pekka_Streng) was still a quite obscure cult figure during my teenage years in the early 1980s. I think I may have read about him in Esko Lehtonen's "Suomalaisen rockin tietosanakirja" ("The Encyclopedia of Finnish Rock") before I actually heard this record for the first time on the radio. I do remember that I bought a reissue version of his second album ("Kesämaa", 1972) at the very first record fair I ever attended, at Lepakkoluola in Helsinki back in 1987.

One of my old favorites from the early 1990s - I vividly remember buying the classic 22-Pistepirkko LP "Big Lupu" from Tunnelin Anttila in Helsinki and can't believe that it was 33 years ago:
