While I support HSR, there is a more pressing need to fix metro commutes with what i call fast rail.

Fast rail is commuter rail within metro regions that provide faster commuting options to driving.

The clear need in Metro Vancouver is Chilliwack to Downtown in four station stops. ( and a raised line over the flooded Sumas Prairie currently blocking Hwy 1 )

What passes for mass transit today is the milkrun Skytrain, and the cheapo & undersized PPP Canada Line. Westcoast Express is a mini-me Via Rail with freight priority. They are a disservice to suburban commuters.

Fast rail isnt new tech. Its simply fewer stations that get people across large distances quickly.

AND, the cost, timeline to completion, and user uptake would be superior in all respects. #fastrail #transit #vancouver #chilliwack #abbotsford #langley #surrey #bcpoli #canpoli #translink #hsr

@[email protected] oh yes!

Fast rail really means: no milk runs. Chilliwack to downtown should be no more than six stations — each that tie to transit corridors at each stop.

#FastRail in the Fraser Valley:
could be used by up to 100,000 people daily
Probably 100 times the use of #highspeedrail between YVR and SEA

Continued freeway building wastes time and money.

Just on transport/ freight emissions in #Australia. “If we replaced 260km of steam-age track with these three sections and another 10km elsewhere, we would cut two hours off the Melbourne–Sydney freight transit time. Energy use would fall at least 10%. Better still, faster tilt trains could then run, potentially halving the Sydney–Melbourne passenger trip to 5.5 hours.” #transportemissions #FastRail

Australia's freight used to go by train, not truck. Here's how we can bring back rail – and cut emissions

Trains once carried most of our freight. Could a return to rail help us meet our emissions cutting goals?
