"As 'moments' go, the 1930s were indeed a time of darkness. Far-right extremist groups, drawing ideological inspiration from Benito Mussolini’s National Fascist Party and the Nazis, sprang up like weeds across the globe. Although chiefly in Europe, they also emerged in the Americas, Australia and the Far East.
South Africa proved particularly fertile when it came to such movements. Louis Weichardt launched the South African Gentile National Socialist Movement in 1933, commonly known as the Greyshirts. Later came the Ossewa Brandwag. In 1942, one of its 'generals', future prime minister BJ Vorster, outlined the OB’s ideological stance: 'We stand for Christian Nationalism, which is an ally of National Socialism. You can call this anti-democratic principle dictatorship if you wish. In Italy it is called Fascism, in Germany National Socialism and in South Africa, Christian Nationalism'"
