In Shadow

Following the road around the fjord's edge, we chased patches of sunlight across the mountains.

The impressive peaks were hidden beneath hats of thick cloud, but the slopes were clear.

Reflecting

Following the coastline along Ísafjarðardjúp, we stopped for coffee and to look for seals on the skerries.

We waited for the rain to stop before we left the car, and we were greeted by this gorgeous rainbow over the fjord.

We could see it's reflection in the still water, and a sharp eye can catch a ghostly double, just visible on the right.

The Closed Eye

Jökulsárgljúfur¹ - 25km long, up to 500m wide, in places 100-120m deep, this impressive canyon forms the northernmost part of Vatnajökull National Park.

The swift waters carry sediment from the glaciers, and one eddy had grown a small black beach. Cut by the ebb and flow of the river, a lovely but fleeting structure had formed.

A closed eye, complete with eyelashes.

Terraces

The stepped side of the mountain is clothed in autumnal colours. Carpets of mosses and grasses are interwoven with gravelly channels.

All around us is the sound of running water.

Tropical?

Where do you think this beautiful beach might be? With its blue sea and sky, clean white sands and peaceful tranquillity, surely this must be Tahiti, Grenada or Antigua.

Nope.

Queen Of Icelandic Mountains

This is Herðubreið, literally "broad-shouldered," a steep-sided volcano formed when lava erupted through thick ice.
Tuyas like this are rare worldwide, only found in areas covered by glaciers and with active volcanism at the same time.

At 1,682 meters (5518’) Herðubreið is the 6th tallest peak in Iceland and is called the "national mountain."

The Jewel Of #Iceland

One of the many attractions of the country, Jökulsárlón ("Glacier River Lagoon") on a particularly gorgeous November afternoon proves once again why it's just so unforgettable.

Sand Snakes

Crossing Austurfljót river in Hornafjörður south-eastern #Iceland, and a powerful windstorm is ruffling the surface of the shallow water.

Sand snakes are created when strong wind currents carry particles across the ground surface in a stream. Cars are frequently blown off the road here during high winds. Icelandic storm Diddú in 2015 had wind speeds measured at 72.6 m/s (261 km/h, 162 mph.)

Outwash Plain

This expanse of sand holds a secret. If one of the volcanoes beneath the eastern glaciers has an attack of gas (a volcanic subglacial eruption) it can cause what's known as a jökulhlaup - an outburst flood of hot water and rocks that can reach a peak flow of 3000 m³/s and last for days.
When it's over, just sediment remains.
