Weathered

The high peaks of the mountain are ribbed by erosion and cut by water. The scree slopes soften the lower reaches, carrying the waterfalls down to ground.

The entrance to the 5.9 km (3.7 mi) long Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng¹ road tunnel in the flank of Kambfjall, which is 888 metres high.

Reyðarfjörður, Fjarðabyggð, eastern Iceland.

Whalewatching in Akureyri.

1-3) A group of humpback whales showed up for catching their extended meal in cold waters after they spent the winter in the Caribbean.

3) was especially lucky, since this whale decided to dive up pretty close to the ship after feeding near the ground

4) The Hólmasól - the ship where the images were taken from

Highlands

This is not the kind of place that treats you well if you disrespect it.

Even though we checked for road closures, kept up to date with weather forecasts and prepared ourselves for a hard drive, the wind was so strong that we had to turn back.

I had grit between my teeth and I could hardly stand upright.

October: Friðland að Fjallabaki. Ahead are Hrafnabjörg (864m/2835ft) and Herbjarnarfell (922m/3025ft) mountains.

Misty Distance

A drizzly day with bursts of dazzling sunshine.

The air above the water was full of fine rain, and then a beam of sunlight sliced down towards the headland.

Looking across Álftafjörður (Swan Fjord) and Hólsnes promontory towards Breiðafjallstindur, Goðatindur, and Sultartungnatindur¹ mountains in south-eastern Iceland.

Dreamscape

A day of mixed weather, but we were determined to visit this remote place.

The light quality, the hazy atmosphere, the patches of sunshine and the tonal perspective all contributed to this scene of unearthly beauty.

October. Dropping down the dirt road towards Mjóifjörður in the Eastfjords of Iceland.

Morning Light

Low southern sunlight strikes the gnarled face of the mountain, throwing shadows.

Ketillaugarfjall, a 668 metre (1102 feet) tall batholith in Sveitarfélagið Hornafjörður, south-eastern Iceland.

Crest

The top of this breathtaking fan of white water, aerated from the very start. Lower down the drop it spreads out even more, forming a lovely lacy white wedding veil.

Dynjandi, the 100 metre tall waterfall cascading down into Dynjandisvogur and then Arnarfjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The flow rate of this falls can reach eight cubic meters per second in summer, but this decreases to ≈ 1m³/s in winter.

Into The Blue

A lovely September morning, and we were on the road early to make the most of a good forecast.

The still waters of the wide bay, the clean cyan of the sky with small clouds, the gentle breeze ruffling the long grass, and the warm sun on my shoulders. A perfect moment.

Looking out from Arnarnes across Ísafjarðardjúp in the Westfjords of Iceland. On the right is Bolafjall radar station and viewing platform.

Morning Gold

Early October, 07:30.
A layer of heavy cloud was hanging above us. Briefly, sunrise underlit the raincloud and touched the misty mountain flanks with golden fingers.

A moment later, the sun slipped behind the blanket of dark cloud overhead.

Breiðdalsvík in eastern Iceland. The mountain is Snæhvammstindur¹ and at the tip on the right is the appropriately named Mosfell.

Accumulation

Stacked layers of cloud hang above the peak-hugging mists, merging but not incorporating. The mountain pinnacles are still managing to hold themselves above the cap.

In the foreground, in the coastal village, it's business as usual.

October: Looking across Hamarsfjörður fjord towards Djúpivogur town, with the mountains between Berufjörður and Breiðdalur beyond.
