“In every age it has been the tyrant, the oppressor and the exploiter who has wrapped himself in the cloak of patriotism, or religion, or both to deceive and overawe the People.”

"Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free."

Statement to the Court, Upon Being Convicted of Violating the Sedition Act

Eugene V. Debs Article.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1918, #EugeneVDebs was sentenced under the 1917 Espionage Act. He gave one of this country's most moving speeches to the court. As I cannot record it, I found someone else who did, though regretfully they left out some parts.

In light of people being arrested as terrorists for protesting genocide or the kidnapping and enslavement of their neighbors, remember the words of Eugene V. Debs,

"Years ago, I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth... While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free..."

And if you want a #RailroadStrike and #EugeneVDebs themed bottle for your coffee or water, my lady-love Emily made this for me. She figured it was too weirdly specific to sell, but I asked her to put it on Etsy anyway. Help us out and buy one here:

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1920, #EugeneVDebs stood in his fifth presidential election as a #Socialist. At a million votes, it was his best in the popular vote, but a lower percentage than he took in 1912. But remarkably, he ran from prison, where he was sent for opposing WWI.
