Mysterious letter: Did the secrets of Kabbalah save the pilgrims from the gallows?

Just before two Etzel fighters went to the gallows, a letter was sent to the first Chief Rabbi containing the virtues that those sentenced to death must recite in order to be saved. In the end, the two did not go to the gallows, but the end of their story was tragic.
