DORA metrics aren't the right choice to understand the impact of your engineering strategy.
You need to choose context specific metrics that will help you:
✅ Measure engineering strategy progress
✅ Know when to stop
✅ Keep people focused on impacting the right metric
✅ A metric that is related to your business strategy from an engineering PoV
When you use DORA, you may:
❌ Lose the engineering strategy focus
❌ Not provide a strong correlation to what the strategy wants to achieve
There are some misconceptions about deciding context specific engineering strategy metrics, like:
👉 You don't need to measure, just execute.
👉 Measuring is hard and time consuming
In the article, I share why those are misconceptions and how you can measure without requiring a costly data implementation.
I also provide some examples of metrics I used in the past from real world examples.

I'm available for #EngineeringStrategy individual coaching sessions 🙌
This week I finished a set of coaching sessions with an engineering manager, and I opened a new slot for anyone that wants to up skill their careers in a more strategic position.
During my coaching sessions we will:
👉 Understand your goals and if I'm the right person to support you during your journey
👉 Propose a path forward to achieve those goals.
👉 Have regular sessions to see your progress, and set personal activities to up skill you on the engineering strategy space.
Up to today, I worked with technical leaders to:
👉 Understand how they can influence better their organization
👉 How to design and execute an engineering strategy
👉 How to overcome internal friction to change
I consider coaching like pairing for leadership. Don't feel alone making hard decisions, and have a second opinion on your tough situation.
Let's schedule a discovery call to understand if I can help you!
Recently, I've been posting about performance metrics for tech teams and people. Why it's necessary and what the problems are when it's not done well.
And from that two questions arose:
I would love to know who for you would be the users of performance metrics. Who defines them? What do you need them for? What is necessary to define good metrics?
I'm creating a wardley map out of the conversation that I started in the #EngineeringStrategy Community in Discord.

I had an amazing experience by meeting people for first time within my network. 🤩
We have spoken about learning and development, engineering strategy, wardley maps, platform engineering, and more.
I created a summary post to share some learnings and conversation I had during this week.
💯 recommended experience.
