G-Nitro's 50 Favorite Albums of 2024

Here are my 50 favorite albums from 2024.

I saw a lot of others talking about doing a list of 50 albums, so I decided why not. I utilized Songlink embeds to help folks find the platform of their choice to listen to the albums.

I also included a Spotify Playlist embed with all the albums in one place.

And finally, #GiuseppePatroniGriffi's Il mare (1962). An actor travels to #Capri. It's off-season and quiet, bar a restless young man who follows him around. Until, a woman arrives.

Capri was popular with the artistic #LGBT upper crust who would spend their winters there in relative privacy. The film plays with this hush hush subtleness; it's there for who wants to see.

The Sea (1962)

A well known actor comes to off-season Capri to unwind and meets a young man. The attraction is immediate and mutual but before their relationship can get off the ground, an alluring woman with a spontaneous sexuality and care free attitude joins the triangle and the boy is slowly pushed out of the picture.

Walter Ungerer's The Animal (1976) initially didn't make my #EndOfYearList. Like its narrative, it needed its time to arrive and settle. Jo gets into Paul's car and moves into his house. The house, remote and silent, and the landscape become their own, snow covered world.

The Animal (1976)

A woman waits for a man at a deserted railroad station somewhere in northern New England. It is the middle of winter. Snow is falling. The two drive to a remote farmhouse. Later two strange children appear at the window, and an old woman summons them away. Isolation, then alienation overcome the couple. The woman has a dream which comes true. She disappears. Nothing is explained. Only footprints remain in the snow that covers the supernatural landscape.

Na wylot [Through and Through] (Grzegorz Królikiewicz, 1973) is based on the 1933 Jan and Maria Malisz’s Case. Driven by poverty, the couple develop their own, strange narrative. Franciszek Trzeciak and Anna Nieborowska are perfectly off, and so is the peculiar rhythm of the story.

Through and Through (1973)

Jan and Maria meet at a party and are immediately drawn to each other. Their difficult financial situation and the scorn of society inflicted on them push them to a breaking point, culminating in a string of murders.

Simone Barbès ou La Vertu (Marie-Claude Treilhou, 1980) was one of the big surprises this year. It follows Simone (Ingrid Bourgoin), an usherette at a porn theatre. In just a handful of long, drawn-out, slow scenes, we follow her along during her boring shift and on her way home through nightly Paris. #SlowCinema of a different kind.

Simone Barbès or Virtue (1980)

Simone and Martine are usherettes in a porno cinema in Montparnasse. Installed in the hall, they greet regulars, put men in their place, chat and pass the time. At midnight Simone departs to a lesbian nightclub.

Door-to-door salesman Franck Poupart is offered a teenage girl in exchange of his wares. He must return, and save her. Patrick Dewaere as Poupart in that bleak, frozen landscape is cast perfectly. His neurotic mannerisms result in a type of slapstick that is first funny, then painful, then harrowing to watch. Série noire (1979) is unforgettable.

Serie Noire (1979)

Franck Poupart is a slightly neurotic door-to-door salesman in a sinister part of Paris' suburbs. He meets Mona, a teenager, who's been made a prostitute by her own aunt. Franck would like to change his life and also save Mona from her aunt. Murder is the only solution.

A monologue between two longtime lovers. Fiancés Liliana and Giovanni (Anna Canzi and Carlo Cabrini) find themselves lost in memories and assumptions when one of them travels away for work. If you have seen Ermanno Olmi's Il Posto (1961), the cinematic progress of his I fidanzati (1963) will take your breathe away. Stunning!

The Fiancés (1963)

A young man has a renewed interest in his girlfriend when he takes a job that separates the two.

火まつり [Himatsuri / Fire Festival] (Mitsuo Yanagimachi, 1985) is of a whole different mood. A lumberjack (Kinya Kitaoji), deeply attached to his island and forest, is faced with a marine park on his family's ground.

Fire Festival (1985)

Tatsuo, a reverent lumberjack, seeks to disrupt plans to build a marine park on his family land, instead promoting his traditions in reactionary ways.

A similar dreamlike mood can be found in Alain Robbe-Grillet's L’Immortelle (1963). Here it's L (Françoise Brion) who is or is not.

L'Immortelle (1963)

A melancholy man meets a stunning, mysterious woman while he is traveling, and discovers she may or may not be involved in a prostitution ring. She disappears after their relationship lasts a few days, and though he searches for her, those around him pretend not to know who he is speaking of.
