Last week when I listened to Death's Symbolic it made me think about my favorite albums. Surprisingly, I feel like it wasn't *this* difficult to come up with a selection of personal classics.

Exactly 1 month after asking if any music fans on Mastodon would like to be part of a Fediverse version of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear list, our project reached 1001 album recommendations!!! Thanks to all who contributed, boosted, favorited, and commented, and to all who have checked out The List so far.

We’re not stopping there though (and, in fact, we’ve already gone beyond 1001, currently sitting at 1021)! Since around 10% of The List is also on the “official” list, we still have room for submissions before we have 1001 “other” albums. But also, Mastodonians like liking things, and there still are (and likely forever will be) some gaps, so more submissions are still very welcome.

In the meantime, here’s a rundown of the project:

• Over 115 places/peoples (so far) are represented by the recommended albums.
• Over 110 Mastodonians (so far) have sent in their personal recommendations.
• The full list can be found on Discogs, and has additional notes (contributor, genre, links, comments).
• The List on this site is alphabetical, with an asterisk indicating if an album is also on the “official” list.
• An Index has been started, for searching by artist, place/people of origin, release year, release decade,  and contributor (by contributor is super cool – if you find an album you like and the person who recommended it submitted multiple albums, chances are you’ll like their other picks). This is a work in progress, so it only has a small portion of the full list so far.
• We’ve started posting spotlights on the albums, on the main page of this blog! These are written by Mastodonians as well, either by the person who recommended the album, or by someone else sharing their thoughts. Anyone on Mastodon is welcome to send in a write up (email johnmastodon @ 1001otheralbums.com)!
• This blog is federated! Mastodonians can follow @[email protected], and each new album spotlight will automatically show up there as a toot. Replying to posts via Mastodon will also add the comment on the blog!

There’s so much good stuff here that I would never have found on my own, and I’m having a blast listening to everyone’s recommendations. Hope you all enjoy this project as much as I have. Even if you find just one new-to-you favorite,  I think we can call the project a success.
