It’s high time we introduce the next #handbook article and its author! Please welcome Andrea Pühringer who is a freelance historian based in Marburg. In her research, she focuses on social, cultural and economic history. Although she is not an expert on #emdiplomacy, she is a great addition to the @emdiplomacy crew because of her interest in economic history. In her contribution she helps to reveal one of #emdiplomacysSecrets: the connection between diplomacy and finances. (2/8)

Brunert and Weber clearly show that we need to reflect on the conditions, functions as well as the underlying messages of diplomatic correspondences, when we read them to discover early modern diplomacys secrets. (9/9)

But what about #emdiplomacy? There are some very impressive examples, of course. For example the fate of a giraffe (ok, not quite a common pet, we have to admit) (2/6)

The #emdiplomacyAdventCalendar (19/24) includes also examples of #emdiplomacysSecrets, e.g. the meaning of animals for #emdiplomacy.
In our meetings with the editorial board & at (online) conferences we discovered that cats play an important role in researching #emdiplomacy. (And not only cats, but also ducks and turtles!)
We also know that pets have a vital role for #modern #diplomacy. Number 10 cat and DiploMog are perhaps the most well known examples:

#Introduction: #Panda meets #Platypus! @emdiplomacy has moved mastodon instance, therefore, we post our introduction again:
This account is all about #earlymodern #diplomacy. We toot about the ups and downs of editing a #handbook on #emdiplomacy & give insights into the #LifeOfTheEditors. We introduce our great authors, reveil #emdiplomacysSecrets, present #emdiplomacysFaces & discuss #emdiplomacysSources.
We share reading recommendations & #emdiplomacy related research. We love to connect (with) #researchers & histodons from the field of #emdiplomacy. And there will also be some #Pandas, of course.
But there are also other sources, like (travel) diaries, newspapers, protocolls, treaties, negotiating files, court records, portraits, plays, etc. There is in fact a great variety of sources, even though we often focus on the letters.
Today, we want to introduce you to some online resources that give you an easy access to #emdiplomacysSources and thus #emdiplomacysSecrets. /2
We talk a lot of #emdiplomacysSecrets, but to discover them, we need to get to the sources. That’s where all the secrets are hidden.
Thus, today we want to talk about #emdiplomacysSources & especially the sources you can access online. #histodons
First of all, what sources do we use for discovering #emdiplomacy? #historikerinnen
Most important are of course diplomatic letters written by the diplomats to their home base & thereby reporting on their activities. #history /1

… the weather! Summer is here! And with it lots of things we can discuss and complain about, like too much or not enough rain, too hot, too cold. #emdiplomats did that, too!
Reading #earlymodern diplomatic correspondences you notice that the diplomats complained about a lot of things: lack of money, ailings and of course about the weather.

Thus, we have to consider #alcohol as a central element of social interaction as well as key to #espionage. (3/3)

In this fantastic database, you'll find also #emdiplomacysSources. #Emdiplomats were always busy reporting home and writing letters, which is lucky for us as we can analyse all these correspondences and discover #emdiplomacysSecrets.
