I co-edit an edited volume about early modern Nordic peace. Regardless the great contributions of the authors in terms of content, I am always surprised how difgicult it is for most academics to apply style sheets. This is especially true for those who are nitpicking when it comes to the work of others and especially students.

Style sheets are not voluntary or for cherry-picking.

As handbook editors and authors of this account it was and is always important to us to show #emdiplomacy in its diversity. This means different forms of #emdiplomacy in different European countries as well as different diplomatic actors. Therefore, we introduce you to black #emdiplomats last month.
Moreover, for us this also means giving researchers from different countries a voice: either by introducing you to their work or during the editing process by including them in the #handbook. For us this is fundamental and connected, because only by listening to different (academic and historical) voices we can understand the complexity of (historical and current) societies. But again, we can only do this, when we have academic freedom. (4/5)

I have recently observed more frequently that editors make changes to texts that go beyond correcting obvious errors/adjusting formalities without labelling them or consulting the authors. But: Texts belong to the author! Changes that go beyond the above mentioned must be approved by them. It applies to words, syntactic structures & punctuation. It is always possible for editors to suggest changes transparently, but the final decision lies with the authors.

It starts to feel real! After a long & not always easy road to publication, I can hold the result of this adventure in my hands: the big pink #emdiplomacy handbook.

I am grateful for our amazing authors & publisher - but most of all for having the only person in the world as my partner in crime who I could have done this project with & who has accompanied me through the ups & downs of the #LifeOfTheEditors, my wonderful colleague @LenaOetzel.

What do editors do when the book they have worked on is finally in print?

Honestly, we would love to go on holidays, but we have teaching duties to fulfill...

However, there is still much to do and to think of in the #LifeOfTheEditors. We have to think of journals which might be interested in reviews of the #emdiplomacy handbook. As the handbook includes authors from 15 countries, it is especially important to reach out to an international audience.
Moreover, we make plans how to present the publication after the book release. What are interesting and suitable formats? How could we include our authors?

#Introduction: #Panda meets #Platypus! @emdiplomacy has moved mastodon instance, therefore, we post our introduction again:
This account is all about #earlymodern #diplomacy. We toot about the ups and downs of editing a #handbook on #emdiplomacy & give insights into the #LifeOfTheEditors. We introduce our great authors, reveil #emdiplomacysSecrets, present #emdiplomacysFaces & discuss #emdiplomacysSources.
We share reading recommendations & #emdiplomacy related research. We love to connect (with) #researchers & histodons from the field of #emdiplomacy. And there will also be some #Pandas, of course.
In autumn 2019, we started our #LifeOfTheEditors with the idea of an #handbook on #earlymodern #diplomacy. This publication will provide an overview of the state of the art in history of #emdiplomacy by bringing together the great variety of research in this field. Fortunately, we are not alone on this project. We have about 40 fantastic authors writing the articles. Morevoer, we are also supported by an international editorial board.
