@aral But again, I don't care in the least what corps do. They're going to fuck everyone over, your little license makes zero difference to that, because they will lawsuit you into the dust if they notice. Blow them up if you can, but don't let it affect your contributions to actual society.

SQLite is the perfect example, because it's public domain. Apple ships it in everything. So can you or anyone else.

@aral I still have my original code, and so does everyone else in the world. The corp has $5M of technical debt and a hell of a time merging when I add features.

@aral Nobody can "enclose" MIT/BSD software, because the original is still out there. SQLite is free, FreeBSD is free, Scheme (depending on impl) is free. MySQL and MongoDB are a pain in the ass because they're """free""" but encumbered.

But it's not practical to release every application you make as this week's variant of GPL, you want to make a few bucks by selling software.

I don't care what corps do, but indie devs are people too.

@aral
Giant corporation: COPY THE THING. WE WILL COUNTERSUE IF THEY EVER NOTICE.

"Free" software dev: It's not in a compatible license with mine, and my time is worthless so I can just rewrite.

Indie dev: I just wanted to use a thing and ship, so I don't starve. Guess I'm selling blood this week while I write my own.

It's completely pointless to make xGPL stuff. If you're making something free, make it free for everyone.
