Drugs are structurally distinct from any existing antibiotics, and appear to work by novel mechanisms that disrupt bacterial cell membranes. This makes them less vulnerable to antibiotic resistance, a growing problem: estimated drug-­resistant bacterial infections cause nearly 5M deaths/yr.
