Duesenberg Starplayer TV Phonic - Royal Purple
We first learned of the Duesenberg Starplayer guitar in a roundabout way, and we had thoughts. Unfortunately, the particular guitar in question was not purple. So we were overjoyed to find a purple one, because now we can talk about it.
And what a guitar‽ Semi hollow, purple sparkle, gold hardware, with Art Deco styling. We love all of that. Exclusive to the Phonic version are a humbucker bridge pickup and P90 neck pickup, yet the “Phonico”covers of both are the same gold stadium-shaped ring with grill top so as to appear identical. (Other guitars with mis-matched pickups could take notes.) There is a typical volume and tone control, but the pickup selector is an unusual rotary knob with a protruding stick actuator.
It has a tune-o-matic style bridge with Duesenberg’s version of a Bigbsy vibrato tailpiece. They seem very proud of their stylized “D” logo, which appears on the headstock, upper bout, tailpiece, and on an extra purely decorative bar along the edge of the pickguard. The Duesenberg name itself appears on both the pickguard and the truss rod cover, which is shaped like an Art Deco building. The fret markers are wing shaped lines that echo the underscoring of the logo. (Not visible from this particular angle, but both the logo and name appear again on a label inside the f-hole, just In case one forgot who made the guitar.)
