Day one of dry-stane-dyking course/volunteer labour on Iona yesterday: repairing/rebuilding an existing wall at Maol croft. Really useful and interesting day.

The local glacial debris of granite and gneiss makes for very hard and irregular stones, but they are all we have to work with!

Three more days later this week , and weather should be much better.... 😊

Kristie de Garis’s Drystone: A Life Rebuilt is unflinchingly honest and unexpectedly funny. A story about the weight of the past, resilience and the hard work of living on your own terms.

Some things may never change. What matters is the life you build anyway.

Foxgloves and Stone

The bright purple foxgloves inject a sharp burst of summer colour into this view of Roseberry Topping, the conical shape of which remains instantly recognisable even from its backside. The rough dry-stone wall that cuts across the scene, adds texture and, for me, some interest.

Even the stepping stones are an echo of a landscaping feature which appears on 19th century maps. #drystonewalling #edinburgh #hermitage
Just upstream from the stepping stones, I'm doing some proper #drystonewalling , restoring the banks which were originally built with #Hermitage House in the 18th century. What feels like a wild, natural landscape was in fact extensively remodelled in line with 18th century tastes.
Absurd little fancy at the end of a day's #drystonewalling - I put in a couple of horseshoe falls. They won't last beyond the first heavy rain, but they're pretty!
A light day's #drystonewalling last Thursday. I persist in trying to keep the stepping stones clear and accessible in #edinburgh #Hermitage - even though people see them only as the starting point for a dam! They block the gaps, so the water flows over the top, rendering them useless as stepping stones. Anyway, I've cleared them again, tidied up the banks and built some steps leading to the stones.
It seems to me that the few times that humans & nature work in perfect harmony is when there is art or craft involved. In this case a gorgeous bit of #sandstone #drystonewalling to create a safe enclosure for a handsome #oak in a field just outside of Letwell on the #NorthNotts #SouthYorkshire border. Hats off to whoever made this!
