DanielTBW N3 - the 3rd leg of the north route of the Trans Bayerwald Tour 2024
During the breakfast I talked with my host for the night and they said just a week ago they had fresh snow fall, especially at the Dreisesselberg. This would be the highest point for that day's tour. From the get go I put on full rain gear because there was a constant drizzle, which turned the dirt roads into mud and crossings of meadows into slip and slides.
For the climb to the church on the hilltop my Garmin consistently tried to route me up the stairs of a foot path.
At Neureichenau at the start of the long climb I tried to see if there was any snow on the Dreisesselberg to be seen, but is was shrouded in clouds. So no other way to find out than to actually pedal up there.
The drizzle subsided once I entered the fog/clouds on the climb and I switched from rain gear into the gilet, which was waterproof enough for these conditions. All along the way up there were signs "der Quälspass" (Suffer fest) showing the distance to the top.
Finally at the top, I could make out the tree tops at about 50m out and that was that. At least there was no snow around and the Almhütte was open for business. I ate a Currywurst with Fries, changed into dry clothing and got going again.
The descent to Frauenberg was mighty nice and still I had about half way to pedal. When I finally reached my accomodation at Philippsreut, I had the lights on my bike on and was wet and cold through and through. After a quick and hot shower I got the table closest to the wood stove in the dining area.
At the end of the day I had close to 65km and 1750m of climbing in the legs.
