In 1994-95, most of my PC #diskettes were formatted with #FDFormat, a program that allowed to put 1.7Mb of information on 1.44Mb diskettes. Yes, that 300kb counted. And you just needed a 1.5kb driver.
Unluckily, those diskettes couldn't be read by Win95 (which was distributed in 1.6Mb diskettes), and can't be read on linux, unless someone writes the right cylinder-sector mapping.
So I'm using #Freedos and the USBDOS (usb 1.0) driver to put he info into usb sticks.
Does anyone know better ways?

This year, I celebrate 30 years as a Linux user. I fondly remember downloading around 30 diskettes with gzipped tarfiles on them. The distribution was called SLS. After installing, there was no X. I had to compile X11R5 myself to support my bleeding edge S3 graphics card, plugged into a «VESA local bus».
Calling up my university with a modem and transferring files using sz. IP and SLIP/PPP came soon after. Compiling my first kernel, 0.99.10.
