Washed into my timeline, in between: "Traditional federation lacks modularity. Hosting, distribution, moderation, algorithms, and business logic are located in the hosting instance. This creates a weak separation of powers. Ideally, users reduce the power of a popular instance by devolving specific functions to other providers. We want to preserve rights in the default course of operation; separating powers helps achieve that." https://www.pfrazee.com/blog/practical-decentralization - definitely worth reading. In virtually every paragraph of it. #digital_technologies #social_networks #atproto #activitypub #federation
Practical Decentralization

The point of decentralization is to guarantee the rights of individuals and communities on the Internet. Pulling that off is a balancing act between practicality and ideology.

Paul's Dev Notes
Each and every time users decides to stay on a difficult instance because moving elsewhere means losing all their history and communications, that bright north star of the Fediverse is losing a bit of its shine. Something about omg.lol that goes unnoticed too often and this feels a bit sad so here we are:

"url.town doesn’t have any overly lofty ambitions; we’re just building our own directory of really nice websites. We’re not trying to fully recreate the original Yahoo! or DMOZ directories. We’re not aiming for some astronomical number of links. This is just one space on the web, tied to a community that loves to share neat things with one another. Quality matters much more than quantity. There’s no need to share everything just for the shake of sharing it; it’s much better to share things that are useful or interesting."

https://url.town/about

Given the predominance of search indexes and model-based suggestions and recommendations, maybe things such as web directories are an interesting step both "back" and "forth" to creating meaningful structure and navigation across a wide range of sites and systems while making sure this is data someone has actually in a way reviewed and considered interesting or relevant - even though, knowing, it's a matter of community and trust at the very end. And maybe this conclusion makes sense in many aspects of digital tools off the path of difficult big tech corporations: Community and trust. #linkdump #omgdotlol #digital_technologies #internet_meta

"In a social economy, we would still care about efficiency, but we would make allowances for human fallibility. Just as we don’t expect perfect efficiency from our lovers, we should not expect it from human teachers, nurses, or baristas."

The Social Solution to Automation | by Nicholas Agar

In our efficiency-obsessed society, new technologies are deployed with the single-minded objective of boosting productivity and eliminating the need for human labor. But rather than worry about the "end of work," we should be expanding the opportunities for human interactions within the framework of a new social economy.
