Washed into my timeline, in between: "Traditional federation lacks modularity. Hosting, distribution, moderation, algorithms, and business logic are located in the hosting instance. This creates a weak separation of powers. Ideally, users reduce the power of a popular instance by devolving specific functions to other providers. We want to preserve rights in the default course of operation; separating powers helps achieve that." https://www.pfrazee.com/blog/practical-decentralization - definitely worth reading. Practical Decentralization

The point of decentralization is to guarantee the rights of individuals and communities on the Internet. Pulling that off is a balancing act between practicality and ideology.

Paul's Dev Notes
Remote conversations for the road: "In this episode Mike Masnick gives us a history of the early internet — starting with what was called the Eternal September, when millions of AOL users flooded the scene, creating a messy, unpredictable, exciting ecosystem of open protocols and terrible UIs." Enjoyed listening to this. I do have a mixed opinion on that protocols-over-platform point of view but there's a ot of stuff in here to wrap head around for a bit. Specifically, that kind of looking back at the early internet, at how things transformed from a per-se decentralized, fragmented environment to a set of services that were actually fun to use and made technology accessible to a whole wider load of human beings before eventually turning into shady, despicable structures one should rather avoid. Specifically, too, that looking back at how a certain group of people nowadays tends to ignore that part of the story and opts to limit things to the negative aspects that came along later. Specifically, too, that ATProto / Bluesky approach of trying to learn from both - decentralization as a crucial aspect for being in power, in control, and usability, accessibility for less tech-savvy people being an undisputable requirement to make technology that serves a particular purpose. The Maybe

Why Are Grok and X Still Available in App Stores?

Elon Musk’s chatbot has been used to generate thousands of sexualized images of adults and apparent minors. Apple and Google have removed other “nudify” apps—but continue to host X and Grok.

The UK's MP's are unwilling to tolerate this kind of Big Brother : Both Georges Orwells, and Aldux Huxley were brits.
Henry the 8th, acted decisively against the feudal "Big Brother" in a brutal way : beading of his wife Ann Bollin, and his friend the bishop Thomas More. This first Brexit has most likely spared England of the terrible religions wars in the rest of Europe.

Now expect the UK to do what the EU, is unwilling or unable to do.

Are You Your Friends’ Friend? Poor Perception of Friendship Ties Limits the Ability to Promote Behavioral Change

Persuasion is at the core of norm creation, emergence of collective action, and solutions to ‘tragedy of the commons’ problems. In this paper, we show that the directionality of friendship ties affect the extent to which individuals can influence the behavior of each other. Moreover, we find that people are typically poor at perceiving the directionality of their friendship ties and that this can significantly limit their ability to engage in cooperative arrangements. This could lead to failures in establishing compatible norms, acting together, finding compromise solutions, and persuading others to act. We then suggest strategies to overcome this limitation by using two topological characteristics of the perceived friendship network. The findings of this paper have significant consequences for designing interventions that seek to harness social influence for collective action.
