RAW, you draw a scenario card and carefully lay out the entire map per the card. This includes placing some tokens on a fairly large map. It isn't the size of Gloomhaven, but it can be about 2/3 the size of a typical card table.
With a group of folks, many hands make light work. For a solo player like me, it feels like a lot of fiddly setup, a sentiment others have shared online.
Another goal is more randomization. Part of solo gaming is the unexpected. 2/
