several #dicefail experiments here... These are all epoxy resin dice as usual, but the blue and cyan ones have uv resin inserts made by curing little blobs and then stacking them together into interesting shapes. The blue one has a bit of red resin streaks for contrast; the cyan is a mixture of cyan and clear. The little dots are a microglitter suspension I use pretty often.
The gold d6 is just alcohol ink and refracting glitter, but! this glitter has always sunk to the bottom before the resin cures; this time I added some Elmer's glue to the resin, which has a dramatic effect on the viscosity, making it a thick gloop, sufficient to suspend the glitter.
I also bought a $30 pottery wheel to make sanding easier. My masters are in great shape so generally the dice don't really need polishing so long as the molds are good, but I wanted to see how clear I could get them. the blue die I polished on all sides; the gold die is polished only on the 1. Hard to tell in the pictures but the polishing really did work well, although unless you're really paying attention in person I don't think you'd notice.
Anyway I didn't have any glass or acrylic small enough to cover the wheel but I do have these neoprene sheets with glue backing sitting around from other projects, so I put that down and then taped zona papers to the top.
Attempted a #dicefail experiment tonight. I used a technique I learned from a YouTuber doing resin art:
I put a bit of UV resin at the bottom of the mold, maybe 1/4 full, and then laid a piece of a vinyl glove on top, then carefully scootched it around with the end of a paintbrush.
I let that cure, then pulled out the vinyl and painted on a thin layer of resin mixed with purple mica. I cured *that*, and then filled the mold and did the rest of the die.
The result is promising! the weird, uneven surface in the middle of the die ends up looking like swirls and tendrils when painted with color. I might experiment with actual paint, darker mica, or a thicker layer, but overall I think this is worth trying with epoxy resin! Finicky as all get out to get the vinyl in there without trappinf air bubbles tho...
I have long been inspired by artist/author/musician/filmmaker/photographer Dave McKean. In the 80s and 90s he frequently used collage and diorama in his visual work, and gold foil sprayed across the images was a recurring motif (as shown in his illustration of The Star card from the Vertigo Tarot). When I started painting mica powder into my dice molds, this was the inspiration.
Yesterday I had a thought about using uv resin to create inserts for normal cured resin and naturally I thought again of McKean. Here's the result of a test run. I colored the uv resin with gold mica, spread it into little blobs and partially cured it so that it was solid but pliable, and then stuffed it into the molds before preparing the pour as normal. Pretty neat! Each die has one angle where they look really cool, especially under strong light. I might try again with less pigment in the die itself and adding more inserts to each.
latest #dicefail experiment: dab the inside of the mold with black alcohol ink. brush on grey mica powder, wipe out the excess, then do a dirty pour of white/caramel resin and gold alcohol ink. I think with the right color combination I can get something that looks like moss growing on rock or dirt?
