Well, that was one shitty #coffee!
Bough another kilogram of affordable supermarket coffee to finish seasoning the burrs of my #DF64 Gen2 grinder with a total of 2,5kg.
Which is a compromise between food waste and necessity.

But somehow those beans instantly clogged up my grinder so badly, to the point where it was actually stalled out.
Grind chamber completely blocked, burrs clogged, flapper blocked, exit chute clogged.
Katastrophe der Bohnen! o.o

Look at this shit that I arduously scraped out of my exit chute (after actually blowing it out o.o), careful not to damage the electrodes of the anti static device.
I mean, WTF was this coffee? <.< Never had this before.

Ended up having to buy another kilogram of coffee beans to finish seasoning and had to throw that stuff away.
Which kinda sucks as I am not a big fan of wasting stuff like this.
But I really didn't want to risk my grinder again!

And with all that, here is my new little beauty.
Aligned, 1,5 kg of coffee ran through for a first seasoning of the burrs and ready to rumble.

Already pulled a few shots today and the flavor profile of the Gen 2 burrs is really interesting.
It is more acidic than the than the good old Italmill burrs of the Gen1 (which had a very classic flavor profile), but not so that it drops into a harsh sourness.

I also get some new fruity names from my current coffee (Apas by Die Kaffeemacher:innen) that I didn't taste before.

There is also a noticeable sweetness which like.
And it gives me a pretty syrupy, thick bodied shot. Not as thick as the Italmills, but a thicker than the ones that I got from the Timemore 064s.

So, first impression is very positive!
Nice profile, almost no static, clean, quite fast & sturdy.

Downside: it's not a quiet grinder, which I knew before.
And it has no variable RPM, which I honestly haven't used that much on the Timemore before I sold it.
I would adjust the RPM when using the DF64 Gen2 for both espresso and filter.
But since I do have a dedicated filter grinder (My good old Fellow Ode 2), I am not missing much, to be honest.

Mods:

  • 3rd printed, magnetic stand for my Weber blind shaker
  • 3rd printed vernier scales, which makes dialing in my shots for much more convenient then the stock dial indicator(thanks to @Kuraiko for the prints!)

What I find amazing, especially compared to the #DF64 Gen1, which was notoriously messy and had huge problems with static build up (I still like the grinder), the DF64 Gen2 is sooo much cleaner.
Which is thanks to the redesigned burr chamber and an ion generator in the exit chute, which helps to break static and prevents the coffee grounds to fly all over the place.

Even after running through 1,5kg of coffee, there really isn't much buildup.
It was just vacuumed with a small hand held vacuum cleaner to remove loose grounds

And after the burr aligment was done, I ran about 1,5 kg of cheap beans through the grinder to start seasoning the burrs.
What I found incredible, is that the #DF64 Gen 2 just plowed through that.
I think the 1,5 kg took me about 20-25 min to grind through.
After that the grinder was warm, but really aced it.

I will run another 1 kg of beans through it when the shop opens again tomorrow and I am home from work.
But I think 2,5 kg is a good starting point for new burrs.
Already tried a few shots today to learn about about the flavor profile those burrs will give me in the future.

I uploaded my first 3D model! And in true fashion it's coffee related. I needed an adapter for a DF64 grinder to hold an Ikape metal 54mm dosing cup. I had lost the original plastic catch cup and it was going to be used with a Breville Bambino so 3D printing to the rescue! When finishing it I put a bit of vinyl fake walnut veneer in the bottom to ad contrast to the piece and match the wood accents of the grinder.
