I think the one thing you have to be aware of in regards to denizens of the #fediverse is that they are verily fatigued by large commercial platforms because of the #ads, the predatory #algorithms, #darkdesignpatterns, #tracking all stemming from the need to #monetize.
Each of those points are important because something's shouldn't be monetized, like #databrokering.
That's why I am suggesting client side algorithmic discovery, or a private and safe alt.
In #darkdesignpatterns today: be careful when updating #microsoft you may accidentally purchase office 365 family for a nice discount.
Seems simple enough to remedy via following support email if you think of that but, not cool
Discovered b/c I monitor my #asd adult child's email

As part of my move to kolektiva.social I cancelled my monthly #Patreon donation to mastodon.green.
Now I'm a product owner and web developer by trade: I know how to operate a web interaction. Still, it took me multiple minutes to even find out how to cancel. All the visible actionable buttons led to upgrades, i.e: paying more. Sometimes deceptively so.
In the end, I found a tiny pencil icon. Behind which the cancellation option was hidden.
A company that uses #darkdesignpatterns like that, instantly loses all credibility for me. I used to think about Patreon in a mildly positive way, as something an #opensource dev might use to fund their work. Based on actually using their service once, I now see them as tricky greedy rats.
If you engage in arm-twisting and manipulating your users, that tells me two things. One, you don't believe in your own product. Apparently its benefits are not strong enough to retain users. If you don't believe in your product, why would I? Two, you're evil.
If you're a product owner or designer: one little "#design optimization to reduce churn" is all it takes, to destroy your brand credibility.
I'm very high, so when I got this advert in the mail it took me a good 20 minutes to figure out the scam and see through the (dark) design patterns that went into this
fyi: the "confirmation code" is redacted because i assume if you call a robot will say "confirm your address is [address this was mailed to]"...which is noneya business!
