Temat zapewniania bezpieczeństwa uczniom i pracownikom szkoły należy do rangi bardziej kontrowersyjnych – jak można to zrobić, nie naruszając prywatności kogokolwiek? W jednym z warszawskich Cosinusów zainstalowano kamery nawet w toaletach, co wzbudziło podejrzenia zarówno wśród mnie, jak i osób, które o tym fakcie mnie poinformowały. Po mojej interwencji zostały one zdjęte.

This is not a funny-looking aquarium – but the tank of the dark matter experiment #COSINUS. It which was filled with 269 cubic meters of water in three weeks. The water in the tank surrounds the actual experiment. 

The water shields the experiment from unwanted background noise stemming from radioactivity or other particles.

COSINUS will start its first measurements by this year. Good luck!

Last steps before the inauguration on April 18: MPP scientist Karoline Schäffner and her team are working on the cryostat that will cool down the COSINUS experiment at the LNGS. By now, the cryostat has already reached its final temperature 9,2 millikelvin (almost -273 degrees Celsius) and is running stably. #COSINUS will test dark matter signals of another experiment. The scientists expect first results in 2025/2026.

The #COSINUS group just moved their lab to the new building. For their very sensitive #darkmatter #experiment in the #LNGS in Italy the scientists operate a special refrigerator to reach very low temperatures. This cryostat was started a couple of days ago – and the group happily shared the news of having achieved “the coolest spot in the building” : 8,6 mK. Since this is very close to absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius), we are glad this is a very local phenomenon ;-). Photo: Florian Reindl

I am really excited about the effort from experiments like #ANAIS and #COSINUS to definitely understand the "quenching factor" of sodium iodide crystals.

NaI has appeared in many experiments, and increasingly in #darkmatter experiments. The QF relates energy in electrons (usually what you see in an experiment) to the energy of the original nuclear recoil. The QF is essential to proper interpretation of experiments using NaI.
