This is Coronet Peak a few minutes ago and the lack of snow is obvious. If it wasn't for their 217 fixed snow guns (plus seven portable guns) they wouldn't be open.

Season snowfall: 26cm
Last seven days: 0cm

The company is describing conditions as "spring skiing" -- in June!

It's day two of the season at Coronet Peak and to be honest it's looking pretty dire. They've had no snow in the last seven days and only 20cm for the season so far. Compare that with Mount Hutt which has had 2.63 metres of snow. Metres!

If it wasn't for 100+ snow guns and some decent grooming, Coronet would be bald. Only the main Coronet Express and learner lifts are open. Off piste will be un-skiable.

Snow in May
goes away.
Snow in June
still too soon. 🎶

Lake Wakatipu from Coronet Peak

NZSki is opening Coronet Peak tomorrow (Friday) despite a lack of snow. But hold your horses, because only the bunny run will be open.

While the Wakatipu has been having minus temperatures all week, an inversion layer has kept the skifields too warm to make snow.

They'll no doubt attract punters and we'll see images of happy skiers and the café will be busy, but the Southern fields still need a decent snow dump to kick off the season.
