After opening the Coronet Express (a real chairlift) on Thursday, Coronet Peak has just closed the mountain until further notice with an astonishingly honest ski report.

"We have experienced a thaw all week with this inversion and the skiing and riding is now better described as agricultural."

Treble Cone has delayed its planned opening today. The Remarks and Cardrona are struggling on. There's not much snow weather on the horizon. Blame El Nino.

NZSki is opening Coronet Peak tomorrow (Friday) despite a lack of snow. But hold your horses, because only the bunny run will be open.

While the Wakatipu has been having minus temperatures all week, an inversion layer has kept the skifields too warm to make snow.

They'll no doubt attract punters and we'll see images of happy skiers and the café will be busy, but the Southern fields still need a decent snow dump to kick off the season.
