Fair warning: topics like "well we could use our wealth and influence to strategically increase forest cover across southern Australia toward pre colonisation levels in order to increase likelihood of mountain precipitation"
or
"hey vote to end fossil fuel subsidies"
...will *definitely* shut down the chat.
It'll be OK on the skin track right up to "hey why are you digging a hole where's your poo bag?"
Anyway what can we do to ski less extractively in Australia?
Start by being less entitled about it. Understanding where skiing and ski resorts sit in physical landscapes and cultural contexts. Undeestand that the culture of commercial skiing in Australia is a micro bubble in a micro bubble.
...hopefully obvious things will follow.
"go backcountry". yes and NO. if yes, pack your poop out and leave the instagram at home!
It is traditionally ski season opening weekend in Australia. Human made planetary heating is messing with that and has been for decades. What's the discourse?
"why is the resort spending money on pushing [a few centimetres of] snow to a free snow play area when We Who Invested* can't do some runs"
The Skiing Industrial Complex is broadly extractive and regressive, making skiing very much and increasingly a fenced off privilege.
