“Run a dozer?”
"Yes, sir," I told him. "Pretty good at it, too."
"Be here 7 AM Monday morning, and we’ll see about that."
I was only 17. Just an eager kid trying to get an operator's seat.
We both knew I was stretching the truth.
I spent that brutal Michigan winter exposed to the elements on a chunk of rattling, clack-clack-clacketing steel...
-breaking frost and grading slush.
-pulling concrete trucks across the soft and slippery grade.
-rescuing drywall deliveries sunk up to their axles in the mud.
--and blading-off the job site every night to keep water from pooling and making matters worse.
By the end of that long, bitter winter, I knew what that machine and I were capable of.
...and I could knock out a half-decent grade in the worst of conditions.
I was an operator.
My construction career began at the blunt end of a shovel.
I worked hard, learned as much as possible, and looked for ways to advance.
Most of the time, I lied...told people I could do things I'd never even tried.
And I don't think I'm alone in that.
How do people learn, grow, and advance their careers in the construction industry in 2023?
Starting from the bottom, with little knowledge, experience, or education.....
Where are the opportunities?
