Big news: Tradescantia Hub is now the ICRA for the entire Commelinaceae family!

What does that mean?

- Cultivar names need to be unique within the whole family (not just within each genus, like before).

- I'll start expanding the online checklist to include other genera. This will take a while to complete!

- I can officially accept registrations from other genera in the family.

- I probably won't be able to do as many growing trials and other research for the rest of Commelinaceae as I've previously done for Tradescantia. You can help by sharing information with me!

ICRA for the Commelinaceae family • Tradescantia Hub

I'm now the ICRA for all Commelinaceae. Which means I'll be able to officially register cultivars in other genera, and I'll start expanding the online checklist to include the rest of the family.

This Murdannia loriformis Bright Star which I showed some months ago when I got it-- it has continued to make flowers- on the same stems! over many weeks very tiny, but still always fun to have things flowering indoors, esp on days like this where it has been dark, wet and chilly (still, I'm about to go out!).

1/4 @TradescantiaHub @plants Bought a new #houseplant the other day, something I do rarely these days, but this was something I'd never seen before- at first glance I thought I thought it was a Sansevieria, but no + the tag said #Tradescantia spathacea Silver- which I'd never heard of till I realised that was the old Rhoeo sp.But I started digging more, since it didn't look right- leaf shape was diff, though that could be varietal--

@Worldturgreen @PLOSBiology I agree, a bad photo or missing characters are the usual issues. In #herbaria, many specimens remain unidentified (and unidentifiable) because essential characters were not collected (e.g., #Commelinaceae are quite notorious as you often need the seeds but the pretty flowers are collected). Sadly, there is so strict rule for all plants which characters are important and which are not. Every group has its own set of traits to distinguish taxa.
