Oscar Peterson, “Motions and Emotions,” 1970 on MPS

Oscar Peterson covering “popular” tunes, including “Yesterday,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Ode to Billy Joe.” I know some folks will find this schmaltzy but as an Oscar Peterson fan I really enjoy it.

My copy is the 2018 reissue in the Ambassadors for MPS series, on 180g vinyl pressed at Optimal GmbH and an insert reproducing the original master tape box along with liner notes by Till Brönner, the ambassador to MPS in this case.

Ended the weekend and welcomed the week after a walk with Warm Wave an album by Latin jazz vibraphonist Cal Tjader fronting an orchestra arranged and conducted by Claus Ogerman recorded in 1964 and released on the Verve label.

The Allmusic review by Stephen Cook stated, "If an album ever betrayed Cal Tjader's affinity for former boss George Shearing's ultra-smooth cocktail style, then Warm Wave would be it ... this is less standard Latin lounge Tjader and more an analog to Jackie Gleason's polished easy-listening sound. Tjader's solos are so smooth, in fact, that they practically disappear into Claus Ogerman's opaque arrangements. Arte1 revela os ‘Outros Toms’ de Jobim

O canal Arte1 exibe, na quarta-feira, 17 de setembro, às 21h30, o espetáculo Outros Toms, que mergulha no lado menos conhecido de Tom Jobim (1927-1994). Dirigido por Anselmo Zolla (coreografia) e William Pereira (direção cênica), com regência musical de Wagner Polistchuk, o projeto propõe uma imersão que vai além da Bossa Nova, revelando o Jobim sinfonista, orquestrador e criador de paisagens musicais que dialogam com a identidade cultural do Brasil.

Gravado na Sala São Paulo com a Orquestra e o Coro Acadêmicos da Osesp, Outros Toms é dividido em três partes que unem música e dança em uma experiência sensorial. O repertório inclui arranjos originais de Claus Ogerman, Nelson Riddle, Eumir Deodato e do próprio Jobim.

A cenografia assinada por Renata Pati e Juliana Antunes reforça o caráter multifacetado do espetáculo, com pisos que se transformam em volumes, cores e texturas ao longo da apresentação, criando novos ambientes a cada cena.

O espetáculo também conta com a participação especial de Gabriel Braga Nunes, como ator convidado, e das vozes de Stephanie Borgani e Filó Machado, que se somam aos intérpretes da Studio3 Cia. de Dança e à força do Coro Acadêmico da Osesp.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a 1964 studio album, by organist Jimmy Smith, and released on the Verve label. Smith is accompanied by a big band, with arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman.

The album received 4½ "stars" from "DownBeat" magazine. Their review stated

"Tequila" è un album commerciale, non certo tra i più importanti di Claus Ogerman, che si limita a scrivere alcune parti di archi. Però l'arrangiamento di questa ninna nanna è molto ben fatto e valorizza la chitarra di Wes Montgomery
