When I talk to my Dad, he often talks about things I'm not interested in or would rather not engage in, because when I try to engage, he gets upset that I don't echo his take on things.

When I talk to my elderly friend, he says the same things every time, but when I bring up things in my life, he's at times changed the subject back to his repeated stuff. And he's at times said he's not interested in topics not related to him.

What they have in common: They're old men, they have hearing problems but won't wear hearing aids, and me.

My wife is installing a pull-out shelf in the kitchen, so we have the dogs in their pen outside to stop one of them from picking up something new and interesting, and running off with it.

So what happens? One of our cats picks up something new and interesting, and runs off with it!
