So the white dutch and scarlet runners in the western peashrub tray have come up.
The red lima are starting to come up, but they are obviously a variety P. Vulgaris as the seed leaves came out, which doesn't happen with P. Coccineus which starts with true leaves.

The striped runners and obsidian ones haven't made a showing,

WIll plant the scarlets and whie dutch today.

So i planted the scarlet runners with the western pea shrubs,
The obsidian runners with the eastern peashrubs,
The striped runners in the old pawpaw tray,
The white dutch runners in the western edge of the western peashrub tray,
The red lima runners in the strawberry tray.
#lyis so I ordered some leafcutter bees to pollinate my summer crops like beans and squash.
Will most likely use sunflower stems to make nesting habitat for them.
Leafcutter bees need holes which are 6mm in diameter. Can use a 7/32 drill bit for that.
Mason bees need an 8mm hole which can use a 5/16 drill bit for.

Okay what depth do the holes need to be? 6 inches or 15 centimeters. Gonna need some longer drill bits.

Okay so I managed to get a 7/32 drill bit 6inches long from home depot, for around $8 pretty good.

So I organized my Smilyan Phaseolus coccineus into 5 subtypes by appearance. There is the ones which are pink or brown with large dark area, those are the standard scarlet runner beans.

Then there are the white variety which is the white dutch variety.

Then there is the ones which are pink or brown with red or brown stripes. That is the striped runner variety.

Then there are two unique variants. Three all black beans, I'm thinking of calling obsidian variety.

And some mostly red with white stripes, I'm thinking of calling granite.

In all should be able to make 5 plots, each at least 6 meters away from the others. And plant each variety with those which are similar to it.

Then once they bear fruit, can see which are best tasting. And sell them. I know that there is relatively little selection of phaseolus coccineus on Etsy. Mostly just the run of the mill scarlet emperor and pink lady. No one i selling white dutch, or striped runner beans.

Having obsidian and granite can be interesting as well.
It may take a couple years to naturalize to the great lakes climate, but afterwards they should do quiet well.

Also can save the tubers of the best specimens and replant them in following years. Providing a mother plant, and extra good tuber producing genes.

The tuber based mother plants should have a head start over the the seedling plants, and help provide long life genes and those which are good for many different years. I think there is a certain wisdom they will gain they can pass on to their children.

Okay so got Smilyan Phaseolus coccinaeus they are hybrids of scarlet runner bean and several other Phaseolus vulgaris.

Based on my search, i've identified several potential species it was hybridized with.

There is a Japanese Pole bean, called Akahana Mame (P. Vulgaris) which looks identical to the scarlet runner bean.

The white beans looks similar to white kidney beans (P. Vulgaris), navy bean (P. Vulgaris), and lima beans (P. Lunatus).

Some that are brown with red spots look like Pinto beans (P. vulgaris), or possibly Akha bean.

The black ones look like turtle beans (P. Vulgaris).

The ones with dark red, with white stripes, look like a hybrid between red kidney beans (P. Vulgaris), lima (P. Lunatus) and scarlet runners (P. Coccinaeus).

In any case with all these hybrids don't know how many are true P. coccinaeus which is distinguished by its perennial root. So will have to grow them, and in autumn dig up the tubers of the good tasting ones and preserve for next year. Can of course also preserve good tasting beans.

Once replanted the tubers should have a head start on the others and thus have be able to contribute more to the gene pool. Helping others have good perennial tubers also.

In case you're interested in genetically diverse scarlet runner beans here is the etsy link:

It's kinda ironic to me that the genetically diverse ones are from Europe, when Phaseolus coccinea is actually indigenous to south america. I know I've gotten lots of seeds of north american native plants from Europe. Pretty weird, but it is what it is.
