BOOK REVIEW
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
I am fascinated with AI and its future impact on the human race. It is the subject of my next book and I have been doing a great deal of research on the fast growing technology. Reading non-fiction as well as fiction, like Darwin's Dilemma, gives me insight into some of the possible outcomes. Science fiction has predicted many things that ultimately proved to be true. It will continue to do so.

In the distant future, interstellar traders are confronted with a deadly opponent. The planet's population they are visiting has been decimated. Taking their place is a super-intelligent artificial intelligence named Grendel. When Grendel attacks the traders, their only hope is to destroy the planet where the artificial life form is based. But survivors are discovered on the planet and it soon becomes a cat-and-mouse game with the advanced intelligence.

The book explores the evolution of intelligence as well as what it means to be a conscious being. Thoughtful questions are brought up on the strengths and weaknesses of humanity in a quickly evolving environment. Grendel sets out to destroy the traders and poses a threat to the rest of the human race. The AI sees humans as a threat and its story is told from his point of view, giving the story an intimate and creepy feel. Can humans exist alongside a new super-intelligent life form, or is it a fight to the finish? Darwin's Dilemma is a well thought out story on the future of intelligence and our place in that universe.

BOOK REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Jack and Dee's marriage is on the brink of collapse when disaster hits. For some strange reason people are on the rampage, and senseless killings are being reported across the country. The president calls for calm, but the killers are uniting. People are being targeted with their names and addresses being announced over the public broadcast system. When Jack's name comes up, they flee.

On the road they encounter city after city burned and all the inhabitants brutally killed. The reason is later explained, but the real excitement is how the family fights to survive and remain together in this apocalyptic thriller. Self-published in 2011, Crouch calls Run a "book of firsts." Following the book's success it was re-released with a traditional publisher in 2024. The success of Run gives hope to all the struggling self-published authors out there, like myself.

Who recalls this one?

As I worked my way through the story I recalled thinking it was a silly satire back in middle school, I mean animals taking over a farm. Now that I am older I see it much differently. Each animal plays a role we have seen in humans as the story chronicles the evolution from a rebellion against tyranny to a totalitarian regime.

It sends a clear message, not as graphic as 1984, but just as relevant today as when it was first published in 1945.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

BOOK REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐/5
Eve and Nate are married and teach at the same school. However their marriage is on the rocks and a student of theirs, Addie, is infatuated with Nate. But Addie has a history of involvement with another teacher and a dark side that is slowly revealed. The storyline is predictable until the end and that's where it doesn't quite work for me. I'm glad the story took a few turns but unfortunately it was too much and for me, far-fetched. This was my second McFadden read and I enjoyed the first, D Ward, much more.

I didn't want to ruin the ending for others, but anybody else feel the same way?

BOOK REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Marley and three of her closest friends are given a dare, but what starts as a dangerous high school prank, quickly turns deadly. The two teenage couples decide to cover up the crime, and we all know that never goes well. It's a familiar storyline, but this one has plenty of twists and turns. Marley is targeted by an unknown caller who may know what they did. The tension builds as her friends fear she will go to the police. As her friends begin to turn on her, she has to rely on an ex-boyfriend for help but she's not sure even he can be trusted. When the police come knocking on her door, she is forced to act quickly. The ending wasn't what I expected and that was refreshing.

BOOK REVIEW
How will AI change our world? Ten short stories highlighting specific areas of artificial intelligence and predicting their future impact on our daily lives.

Some people may have an optimistic or nonchalant view of our future with AI, I do not. I am not alone in believing it's impact will be profound, unlike anything we have ever experienced before. It will not be a change in technology, but a new way of thinking. What are your thoughts on AI?

"The most intelligent inhabitants of that future world won't be men or monkeys, they'll be machines." -author Arthur C. Clark

"It's very possible that humanity is just a phase in the progress of intelligence." -Geoffrey Hinton

The book was an eye opener for me and I am so looking forward to seeing the movie. What are your thoughts?

For me it was a shocking example of corruption, depravity, and discrimination on all levels. Crimes that were washed away with time, this is a story that needs be told and lessons learned from it. In the words of a descendant of a victim, "The blood cries out from the ground."
