finished watching Animal Farm
I'm reading a lot of right wingers pissed about this movie being "not anti-communist", with one of them specially offended by the lack of "antifa" villains. Rotten Tomatoes... *sighs*

Animal Farm, Orwell, and the CIA
I reread Animal Farm, the 1945 novella written by George Orwell. That is his pen name. His birth name is Eric Blair. The pseudonym combines the names of England’s reigning king and one of the country’s rivers. I read the book in high school, but it was not an “assigned” reading. I suspect my Cold War era teachers wouldn’t take a chance on the book, but someone recommended it to me.
The story is about the livestock at a farm who overthrow their human master and assembles their own government. It was a very clear allegory for the Russian Revolution and meant as a warning about Communism. It was rejected by a number of publishers due to its clearly anti-Soviet themes, but the book was a success after publication.
Orwell is still best known for 1984. Both books explore society’s susceptibility to totalitarianism. Orwell’s experiences abroad in the 1930s, as both an imperial police officer in Myanmar and a volunteer fighter in the Spanish Civil War, informed his distrust of authoritarian movements.
Although these two works are fiction, they’re often used to explain social and political problems. People may know terms like “Orwellian,” “Big Brother,” and “double-speak” even if they haven’t read his books. coopted across the political aisle. Oddly enough, both the American left and the right sometimes claim Orwell as a spokesman for their causes.
What I only learned recently is that in 1954, during the Cold War, the CIA covertly funded an animated film adaptation of the novella that emphasized criticisms of communism while limiting criticisms of capitalism. I saw this film sometime in the 1960s in a classroom. I don’t recall it being taught or discussed. Maybe it was a filler for a day when a teacher was absent.
Cold War tensions gripped the United States soon after WWII, and the American government was searching for anti-Soviet propaganda to spread across the world. Animal Farm’s messaging made it the perfect material to aid their battle against Stalin and his regime.
As reported by The New York Times, the CIA wanted to give Animal Farm a wider audience, so they covertly backed a movie adaptation that downplayed the source material’s attacks on capitalism and amplified its opposition to Communism.
Orwell died on January 21, 1950, and soon after, CIA agents bought the film rights from his widow Sonia Orwell. They hired the filmmaker behind the monthly theatrical newsreels, The March Of Time, to communicate between the production team and the CIA. They wanted it to be animated not only because it was much easier than working with live animals, but because it would appeal to a wider audience, including young impressionable children. They decided to work outside Hollywood with a U.K.-based husband-and-wife team. That also made it look less like American propaganda. That team of Halas and Batchelor had produced around 70 war information and propaganda films for the UK’s Ministry of Information and War Office during World War II.
This was the time of the Joe McCarthy communist accusations about Hollywood, and the CIA might have also been suspicious about American film companies. The CIA’s involvement had to be kept secret.

I haven’t seen the new 2026 film adaptation, directed by Andy Serkis. I watched the trailer, and despite much better animation and celebrity voices, the film hasn’t gotten great reviews. Some critics argue that the movie misunderstands Orwell’s satire. Well, I thought that was true about the interpretations of my classmates and audiences watching the original film in the 1950s and 1960s. Satire can be tricky.
