They discover the other world has been deliberately technologically inhibited by killer satellites in orbit. @bookstodon I'm trying to remember a book I read once. I'm pretty sure it was published by Baen. The premise was that humans from Earth are stranded on a planet where all life is mutually toxic with terrestrial life and there are two species of intelligent aliens which both resemble giant land squid one of which has roughly iron age/medieval technology and the other has little material technology, but can make food safe for the humans.

Trying to remember a book that I read as a teenager (back in the 80s), going by some very vague memories. Search engines have proven unhelpful.

What I remember was something about a group of misfit teens at some kind of camp, or a detention centre, or something. They break out, steal a truck even though only one of them knows how to drive. I remember getting it confused with "The Outsiders" so I think it had a similar title.
